| After an already busy
spring, the season has started with a vengeance. Lots of people are
finding that their umbrella did not survive winter storage intact. We
are here to help, but we need to ask for a little patience. Current
lead time is around 3 weeks, and may get longer as spring heats up. If
you need to meet a deadline, please ask, and we'll tell you if we can
meet it. Your patience will be rewarded, though, with a beautiful, long
lasting, custom made replacement cover. For orders requiring
custom fabrics please email sales@umbrella-recovery.com
for a quotation. Please make sure to read our terms
of sale before ordering. |
How to properly
measure your replacement cover
With
virtually hundreds of different manufacturers worldwide, it is almost impossible to buy a
standard replacement cover for most market umbrellas. There is simply no standard
7ft., 9ft. or 11ft. umbrella, and in most cases the manufacturer can not be determined.
For the vast majority of imported market umbrellas, manufacturers and retailers simply
don't offer replacement covers.
With the help of a few simple measurements submitted by
you, and our CAD design capabilities, Umbrella-Recovery will custom tailor a new cover to
your frame, no matter who the manufacturer. This guarantees a perfect fit every time, and
a new lease on life for your perfectly good umbrella frame.
Please note that we can only fabricate covers
for MARKET STYLE umbrellas with rigid ribs, such as depicted below. 'Mushroom' or 'Pagoda'
style umbrellas with flexible wire ribs are impossible to fit properly without having the
original cover as template.
MEASURING A ROUND UMBRELLA

See below for detailed instructions
|
-
Open umbrella, with your existing cover in
place. If you have a push-up style, lock the umbrella in the uppermost position.
On crank style umbrellas, crank umbrella to the top stop, so that the
fabric sits taut on the frame. No longer have the fabric? See bottom of the paragraph for
details.
-
Measure distance 'A', from center
to center of the tips of the umbrella ribs. Measure at least three
panels. On square
umbrellas, measure distance 'A'. If the measurements are different, calculate the average
distance. (Distance 1+2+3+4 divided by 4). On rectangular umbrellas, measure both the short side
'A1' and the long side 'A2'.
-
Measure distance 'B', the distance from the
center of the top hub (where usually a decorative finial is screwed in)
to the end of the rib. Note: this is longer than the actual rib! On square
or rectangular umbrellas, measure distances 'B', 'B1' and 'B2' as
necessary, starting at the center of the top hub, to the tip of the long
and short rib. Click on the images to the right for an enlarged view of required
measurements
-
Measure the diameter of the finial hole 'C'
in your umbrella cover. This may be from the size of a 3/8" brass grommet to 2"
in diameter, and is determined by the type of finial used on your umbrella, and the type
of bolt used to fasten it.
-
Measure dimension 'D', the cross
section of your umbrella ribs. Most market umbrella ribs have a rectangular
profile, 1/2" to 3/4" wide by 3/4" to 1" high. If tapered at the end
(as often seen on larger wood umbrellas), be sure to measure at point 'D', the very
end of the rib. This measurement allows us to custom fit the end pockets for a snug fit
over the rib ends. Enter the cross section measurements as Dimension 'D'. See the image to
the right for details.
-
No longer have your umbrella cover?
Here's how to measure without the fabric: Crank or push the umbrella frame open
to the stop. If it doesn't have a defined stop, bring the lower hub to the position where
it previously rested when the umbrella was open (this is usually indicated by some wear on
the umbrella pole)
Lead a string around the perimeter of the umbrella - use tape to hold the string in place
on the end of each rib. Adjust the ribs sideways so the distance from tip to tip is
approximately equal. Make sure the string has no slack, and mark the length. This is the
length of the perimeter. Divide by number of ribs (336" perimeter on an 8 rib
umbrella gives 42" for dimension 'A', the bottom of the pie-shape) Proceed to measure
dimension 'B', the distance from the tip to the very center of the top hub. This gives the
long side of the pie shape. With these measurements we can calculate the exact size of the
cover.
